Meaning: Pinan means "Peace & Harmony" or "Peaceful Mind", and is the first part of the Pinan Kata. It was developed by the great Shuri Te master Anko Itosu, who originally intended for the Pinan Katas to be one whole Kata. However, he later broke it into five parts to simplify it as a teaching tool for his beginning students.

Starting Position: Facing North, Horse Stance
  1. Direction: West  Stance: Left Cat Stance   Action: Turn 90 degrees Left, and execute a Left Outside Block
  2. Direction: West  Stance: Left Cat Stance   Action: Without stepping, execute a Right Uppercut
  3. Direction: North  Stance: Drawn Up   Action: Turn 90 degrees Right, and draw up by bringing the right foot to the left, and put both hands on right trigger, and slowly transfer them to left trigger position
  4. Direction: East  Stance: Right Cat Stance   Action: Turn 90 degrees Right, and execute a Right Outside Block
  5. Direction: East  Stance: Right Cat Stance   Action: Without stepping, execute a Left Uppercut
  6. Direction: North  Stance: Drawn Up   Action: Turn 90 degrees Left, and draw up by bringing the left foot to the right, and put both hands on left trigger position
  7. Direction: North  Stance: Left Front   Action: Stepping forward, Left Reinforced Outside Block
  8. Direction: North  Stance: Left Front   Action: Without stepping, execute a Low X-Block followed by a high X-Block
  9. Direction: North  Stance: Right Front   Action: Left Hair Grab, step forward and pull in to a Right Reverse Punch - Kihap
  10. Direction: East  Stance: Horse   Action: Turn 270 degrees left, with the body facing the East, looking South and execute a Right Low Block
  11. Direction: East  Stance: Horse   Action: Without stepping, look North, and execute a Left Backfist, followed by a Left Knifehand Strike, finish with a Left Neck Grab
  12. Direction: West  Stance: Horse   Action: While stepping forward, execute a Right Inside Crescent Kick, followed by a Right Elbow Smash (making contact with the left palm on both strikes)
  13. Direction: West  Stance: Left Front   Action: Left Reverse Punch
  14. Direction: North  Stance: Right Reverse Cat   Action: Right Reinforced Backfist Strike
  15. Direction: Southeast  Stance: Left Cat   Action: Pivot 225 degrees left, while holding the same hand position as the previous movement
  16. Direction: Southeast  Stance: Right Reverse Cat   Action: Jump forward (over the dead guy) and execute a Low X-Block
  17. Direction: South  Stance: Right Front   Action: Right Reinforced Outside Block
  18. Direction: North  Stance: Drawn Up   Action: Turn 180 degrees left, and bring the hands to left trigger, slowly over to the right trigger position
  19. Direction: Northwest  Stance: Left Front   Action: Right Reinforced Groin Strike
  20. Direction: Northwest  Stance: Left Back   Action: Slide Back into a Back Stance, while pulling the groin off with the right, up above the right shoulder, while simultaneously executing a Left Low Block
  21. Direction: North  Stance: Drawn Up   Action: Turn 45 degrees right, and bring the hands to right trigger, slowly over to the left trigger position
  22. Direction: Northeast  Stance: Right Front   Action: Left Reinforced Knifehand Strike to the leg.
  23. Direction: Northeast  Stance: Right Back   Action: Slide Back into a Back Stance, while breaking the leg by ripping back with the left, up above the left shoulder, and holding the leg with the right hand - Kihap
